<시인 과  시>  The poet and Poem with Grace Cavalieri      미국 국회도서관  녹음 방송            서윤석 지난 5월 9일  매릴랜드 계관 시인 Grace Cavalieri 의 초청을 받고  여덟편의 내 영시를 낭송하는 < The poet and the poem >프로그램 방송에 나갔다.  되돌아보면 나는 고등학교 시절 부터 원고료 심부름을 해드렸던 청파동 2가 효창국민학교 정문앞에 사시던 이어령 선생님을 비롯하여 소설가 장용학, 평론가 신동욱  선생님 같은 훌륭한 분들 한테서 문학수업을 받았다. 그러나  좋아는 했지만 처음부터 나는 문학에 매달릴 수 없었다. 다만 의예과 시절에 일기를 썼을 뿐이다.  본과에 올라가면서  부터는 마음을 가다듬고 의학공부와 가정교사를 하면서 학비를 벌어야 했다. 그때 쓴 일기장이나 의예과 졸업장을 형님한테 마끼고 1972년 미국으로 왔지만 이젠 그 행방이 묘연하다.  젊은 시절의 아름다운 이야기도 많이 들어있을 터인데…다만 1968년 2월 의과대학을 졸업할 무렵에 그 당시의 의사협회 신문기자가 나에게 부탁해서 졸업소감을 쓴 일이 있었다. 재학시절에 건우회(기용숙교수지도) 학생 교양단체를 고인이 된  신 실동문과 같이 운영했던 때문일 것이다. 그러니 그것이 최초로 공식적으로 발표한 나의 글이다. 그 후 40년간은 대부분의 의대친구들처럼 그냥 의사로만 바쁘게 살았다. 미국의 Lima 근처인  Toledo, Ohio에서 마종기 시인이 살았지만 <시를 무엇하려고 쓰는가?>생각하면서 시를 내가 쓴다는 것은 생각도 않고 있었다.  그러던 나는 1995년경 부터  수필이라고 할 수있는 <금강산 일만 이천봉, 페블비취에 온 친구들, 센앤드루스  올드 코스에 온 친구들> 등을 미주의대 동창회가 발행하는 시계탑에 육필로 쓴원고를 보내서 발표했다. 그러다가 의사로서 은퇴후 65세가 된  2008년에 <헬로 닥터씨오>수필집을  육필로 쓴 원고를 보내고 새 철자법으로 교정을 받고 발간했다. 그후 서울을 방문할 기회가 생겨서  월간 <시문학> 잡지를 광화문의 교보문고에서 구입했다. 요즈음 시인들이 어떻게 시 작품을 창작 하는지 알고 싶어서 정기 구독자가 된 것이었다. 시를 쓰자는 충동이 이때 시작한 것이다. 그러다가 혼자 만 그냥  작품을 쓰지말고 문단에 정식 등단을 하라고 권유하는 아내의 말대로 2009년가을 월간 <시문학>에 응모했다. 10편의 작품을 보냈는데 놀랍게도 신인 우수 작품상을 받고  한국문단의 시인이 되었다.  그것은 그해12월 24일 내 생일에 받은 선물이었다. 이렇게 황혼의 나이에 나는 드물게 의사 시인이 된 것이다. 40여년의 이비인후과 의사로서의 경험이 시창작의 모든 바탕이 되었다. 자연히 생生과 사死를 다루는 작품이  많이 쓰여졌다. 언어의 유희보다는 체험에 의한 사물시로서 깊이가 있다는 평을 받았다. 심사에 문덕수,박재릉, 김규화 신규호 시인들이다. 한편 응모를 권한 나의 아내는 30년동안 편지를 우리 어머니에게 (회답이 꼭 왔음) 한 달에 한 번 (송금수표와 같이) 쓰는 이외에는 절대로 자신의 글을 쓰지를 않았다. 그러나 대구의 육군군의학교 교관(대량전상자 관리, 응급처치,의무실장1968-1971)으로 군의관 복부 중 시작한 우리의 가난했던 결혼 초 부터 또 여주군, 강천면, 전기도 없던 무의촌에서 살 때도 아내는 어두운 등잔불 아래에서 문학잡지와 책을  읽었다. 전공이 그래서인지 지금도 사전보다 정확하게 내 글의 잘못된 철자법을 고쳐주고 자세히 읽고 평을 해주었다.  우리가 Lima,  Ohio에서 미국의 수도 워싱턴으로 이사를 온것이 벌써 15년이 되었다. 2013-2015년에는 나는 서울대 미주동창회(12대 오인환 회장시)  편집위원으로 봉사했고 내 시작품을 이기준 주간이 매달 나오는 미주 서울대학교동창회의 회보의 첫면에 크게 천연색으로 올렸다. 고마운 일이었다. 그로 인하여 나의 시가 차츰 더 성숙해졌다. 이어서 10년전에 미주 서울의과대학 동창회장직을 맡게되고 시계탑의 편집에도 관여하게 된 것이 이제 10년이 되었다. 또 나는 수도 워싱턴 지역의 한국문인회의 모임,포토맥포럼, 윤동주문학회의 모임에 적극 참여하여 글을 썼다. 한글 타이핑도  배우고 시문학에도 자주 작품을 발표했다. 나자신이 발전하기 위함이기도했다. 또 이지역에서는 영문으로 글을 쓰는 모임이 문인회의 박현숙 회장에 의하여 시작되어 조지워싱턴대학 언어학과의 김영기 명예교수의 리더쉽으로 이어갔다. 작년에  발간된 Songs In A Second Language 에도 참여했다. 이책의 출판과 관련해서 Maryland계관시인 Grace Cavalieri와의 인연이 이렇게 시작됬다. 한국문학을 워싱턴 주류 문학사회에 소개하는 계기가 된 것이다. 송윤정 수필가, 이광미 시인, 박숙자 소설가, 황보 한 공학박사, 김인기 시인, 임정현 시인, 강혜옥 회장을 포함한 김영실, 서나영, 김미영, 정혜선, 노세웅, 김인숙 등 참여한 여러분의 고귀한 업적이다. 지난 2월 15일  미국 최초의 대학의 하나인 해변가 Annapolis의 St, John’s College에서 이 책의 저자들이 Book Signing (사진참조)을 했고  Grace Cavalieri 리드로 황보 한 박사 , 김영기교수, 이광미 박사가 그날 자신들의 영문 작품낭송을 했다. 그후 Cavalieri시인의 주선으로 3월 15일에 김영기 교수가 초대되어 그녀의 영시와 대담을 국회도서관에서 녹음을 했다. 기록을 보면 2003년 한국인  하와이민 100주년 행사로 미국회도서관에서 최연홍시인, 김행자 시인이 자신의 작품을 낭송하고 영어로 번역한 것을 미국시인이 낭송을 해준 기록이 있다. 그때 권귀순 시인도 박남수 시인의 갈매기를 한국어로 낭송했다.  따라서 그 22년후인  2025년 3월 15일에  1세 한국인으로 영어로 자신의 작품을 미국회도서관에서 낭송 것은 이날 김영기교수가 처음일 것이다.  그 다음 달에 나는 뜻밖에 연락을 받았다.  Cavalieri시인이 그녀가 지난 십여년간 Present하고있는 The Poet and the  Poem Program에  나를 초대한 것이다. 35분에 걸쳐서  여덟편의 내 영시를 내가 낭송하고 그녀와 대담을 하는 것을 Zoom으로 미국회도서관이 녹화하는 것이다.  Show의 기록들은 Podcast와 유튜브로 방송되고 있다. 날짜는 5월 9일 금요일 오후 1시로 정했다. 내가 1972년 미국에 온지 53년만이고 시를 쓰기 시작한지 15년 만이다. 이 녹화를 위하여 나는 실수가 없도록 준비했다. 의사로서의 미국생활의 처음 38년간은 주로 영어권의 사람들을 상대했지만 지난 15년은 워싱턴으로 이사를  와서는 교회를 가도 그렇고 거의 매일 한국사람들을 만났다. 골프도 매주 의대 동기들과 치고.  한국 교포사회에서 주로 생활하는 관계로 나의 영어대화능력이 줄었다. 언어라는 것은 매일 사용해야 된다. 아무리 영문학을 전공하고 영문책을 쓰고 읽어도 자주 사용을 안하면 소통에 장애가 생긴다. 그래서 이 녹화에 실수가 없도록 준비했다. 조금씩 노년에 청력이 나빠졌으니까 우선 Zoom으로 들어오는 컴퓨터의 Volume을 높이고 2주일간 영어책만 읽었다. 역사가 깊은  The Poet and the Poem  by Grace Cavalieri에 유튜브에 들어가서 과거에 나온 시인들과 어떻게 대화가 진행되는지를 듣고 보았다. 그 낭송 속도와 발음의 정확성과 예술적 표현을 듣고 나도 연습했다. 녹화를 나는 내 서재에서 Zoom으로 하니까  배경을 정리하고 잡음이 안생기도록 외부에서 오는 집 전화선을 두 시간동안 차단했다. 또 내자신의 낭송을 일주일 전부터 하루에도 4-5회  녹음해서 들어보고 수정했다. 이날의 녹화를 슬쩍 옆에서 관찰하려는 아내를 사정해서 딴 방으로 모셨다. 혹시 기침을 하거나, 재치기를 하는 잡음, 특히 설거질하는 소리가 녹음에 들어오면 그것은 곤란하기 때문이다. 밝은 색 넥타이를 오랫만에 매고 정장을 하고 잘 정돈된 세재의 테이블 앞에 앉아서 자료를 준비하고 약속시간을 기달렸다. 종이를 접는 소리도 잡음이 되니 안생기도록 조심했다. 물도 한 컵 준비했다. 드디어 5월 9일 금요일 오후 1시에 정확한 시간에  시인 Grace Cavalieri와  미국회도서관 녹음 담당인 30여년의 경력을 갖은 미스터 Mike T.가 화면에 나왔고 그는 인사를 하고 녹음실로 물러났다. 이어서 설레이는 녹음이 시작됬다. 나는 정성을 다하여 작품을 하나하나를 낭송하고 그녀와 대담했다. Calvalieri 시인은 93세의 노련한 방송인자 극작가이자 시인이다. 그녀는 나이에 비하여 놀랍게도 젊은이처럼  정신이 맑고 유모어스럽고 훌륭했다. 녹화는 잘 진행되었고 마지막 작품인 미주 의대 학술대회 연회장을 묘사한 <The Most Beautiful Couple’s Dance 가장 아름다운 부부의 춤> 을 낭송하고 끝났다. 감사할 뿐이다. 대담 일주전에 여덟 편을 선택하라고 연락이 와서 작년에 미국회 도서관에서 채택된 나의 시집  <무심한구름 Callous Cloud>에 있는 8편을 골라서 책과 함께 그녀에게 미리 보냈다. 이날 고마운 마리아를 한.영으로 낭송하면서 시작하여. 영어로 <우크라이나 어린이에게 보내는 편지, 굴, 생각하는 숲> 으로 이어지고  친구의 고통을 안타까워하는 <몸이 안 움직인다>, 월남전이 관계된 <흐느끼느 소리>, 제2의고향 < 라이마랜드로> 순서로 낭송했다. 육이오  사변시절 나의 이야기와  월남전이야기, 해부학교실이야기, 16세 소녀의 두개골에 대한 감사의 글, 한국의 경제적인 도약에 대하여 소개했다. 그리고 6.25전쟁후의 낙후되었던 한국의 농학, 공학, 의학, 교육제도를  발전시키는데 기여한  University of  Minnesota Project에 대한 고마운 이야기도 보냈다.무엇보다도  한글을 통한 우리민족의 우수성을 함께 설명할 수 있었다.  이렇게 문학을 통하여 유투브와 Podcast방송으로 나가는 이 영상 프로그람에 1세 한국사람으로 처음 참여하게 된 것을 감사한다. 나는 Grace Cavalierii 시인에게 의대 시계탑 신문과 미주 의대 시계탑발행 50주년 문집을 영어로 주석을 달아서 다음 편지와 같이 보냈다.  My Dream (나의 꿈) 그것은 분명히 기적의 꿈입니다/지난 2월 보슬비와 같이 찾아왔어요.성 존스 대학에서, 아름다운 캠퍼스, 도서관/그리고 많은 훌륭한 연사들의 목소리와 함께 왔습니다 네 그렇습니다/나는 여덟살이었지요 1950년에/한국전쟁이 터지고 난 얼마후/개천가 대구동부피난 국민학교에서 구구셈을 암송할때/신발이 없었어요 74년 전 그때엔/그런데 보십시오 나는 지금 2025년에 시인이 되어/여기 미합중국 수도에 당당히 섰습니다/미국 국회도서관이 녹화하는/뛰어난 시인 그레이스 카발레리가 주도하는 내 시 낭송을 위하여 왔습니다/존경하는 시인과 함께 시를 읽으니 가슴이 뜁니다 이것은 분명히 기적입니다/축복을 받은 것입니다/달리 설명을 할 수 없습니다/맑은 음성, 따뜻한 사랑, 인류애, 그리고 시의 힘이 위대합니다/나는 꿈속에 있습니다. 아주 행복한 꿈입니다/존경과 감사를 드리면서        5/10/2025 서윤석 The Poet and the Poem with Grace Cavalieri 정혜선 1분 전       Recorded by Library of Congress           (Seo, Youn-Seok, Virginia)   On May 9 th , 2025, I was invited to this program by the poet laureate of Maryland, Grace Cavalieri.  As I recall my high school period, there was a great class on literature given by many famous teachers such as O-young Lee, Yonghak Chang, Dongwook Shin. Mr. Lee who used to live across from Hyochang Elementary School in my neighborhood, asked me to go to a publishing company to bring a check for his manuscript. I liked poetry, but I could not hang on to it for a living. Instead, I did write my diary for a while, but when I became a medical school student, I had to concentrate on studying and working for my tuition. I left my diary-book and my premedical course diploma at my older brother’s house when I immigrated to the US in 1972 and I do not know where those are. It must have a beautiful story in it. My first published writing was an essay on Korean Physician’s Newsletter in February 1968. I was requested to write it by an editor because I at the time led a social student organization, Gunwoo Society with my friend, the late Dr. Shill Shin. The next 40 years afterward I lived as a hard-working physician like most of my classmates. Although the Poet Jong-Gi Mah resided at Toledo, Ohio near Lima where I lived. When I saw him, I wondered why he wrote poems. On 1995 I started writing essays with titles such as “Diamond Mount Trip”, “My Friends at Pebble beach”, and “My dear friends at Old Course at San Andrew” on my alumni newsletter, Sigetop. At my age 65 after retirement from medicine, I published a book “Hello Doctor Seo” and I visited Seoul and purchased a monthly poetry magazine “Shimunhak” to check how they write poems nowadays. Afterward, I started writing poems. I was impressed with a new style of poetry, and I practiced in creating my own. One day my wife advised me to apply to an official admission process to be a new poet.  I agreed and sent my 10 poems as an applicant. On December 24, 2009, on my birthday I received great news from Poet Kyuwha Kim, the editor of Shimunhak and I became a poet. My 40 years of experience as an ENT physician helped my writing, and many poems were about life and death. The panel members for selecting poets were DukSoo Moon, Jaerung Park. Kyuwha Kim, Kyuho Shin and they praised my works on the basis of true experience rather than decorative language. I would like to acknowledge my wife, Sunja, for encouraging me to apply. She graduated from Ewha Women University where she majored in literature. We married during my military service time when we were poor financially. After serving as a medical officer at the Korean army medical school, I served another year at a remote village where there was no electricity. I recall that she always read books even under dim light and had sent a letter to my mother once a month with a check for our parents for 30years till 2005 when my mother passed away at age 97. Also, my wife is very good at spelling, and she has been the first one who read my writing and gave me her opinion with some criticism.  But she never writes on her own. 15 years passed since I moved from Lima Ohio to Virginia. I served as an editorial member of Seoul Nation University alumni Newsletter in the US (2013-2015) and I served as the 44 th  president of my medical school alumni association in North America (2015-2016). I have overseen editing newsletters on Sigetop till now for the last 10years. Also, I attended the activities of Korean literary society in Washington, International PEN Korea, and YundongJu literary society. I learned typing too. All my literary involvement stimulated me to write better.  Several years ago, poet Hyunsook Park established English division of LSW and afterward Young-Key Kim Renaud led to publishing Song In A Second Language  and many members participated including Yearn-Hong Choi, Sarh Song, Kwang Mi Lee, Han Hwangbo, Sukza Park, Ingee Kim, Lydia Im, Hea-ok Kang, Sam Se-Woong Ro, Haesun Jung Ravoke, Insook Kim, Me-Young Kim, Yong-Sil Kim. Meyoung Kim, Nayoung Seo, Young-Key Kim Renaud. Hyun Park-Han, and Youn-Seok Seo. For this book, Poet Grace Cavalieri previewed and made comment, <Voice as A Bridge>. Last Feb 15, 2025, at the St. Johns College, Annapolis Maryland we had book signing session after presentations by Dr. Han Hwangbo, Dr. Kwang Mi Lee, and Professor Young-Key Kim Renaud led by Maryland poet laureate Grace Cavalieri. On Marh 15, 2025, poet Grace Cavalieri invited Professor Young-Key Kim Renaud for a recording at recording room in the US Library of Congress on her English poems and reading. This was the first time any Korean born person did a reading for this program. In the past 2003, as a memorial event of 100 years immigration of Korean to America, Yearn-Hong Choi and Haeng-Ja Kim read their poems on Korean but English version were read by American and Kwi-Soon Kwon read a poem, “Sea gull” of poet Namsu Park in Korean. In April I was surprised and excited to receive an invitation from the program The Poet and   the Poem  presented by Grace Cavalieri over many years. That visual recording will be done by the US Library of Congress, and I had to read eight of my English poems and Grace Cavalieri will be in the talks together in remotely. It will be on Podcast like her other many previous programs. For me It was 15 years after I started writing poems and 53years after I came to the US. I had to prepare for this appearance. For 38 years from 1972, I was around English-speaking people but the last 15 years since I retired from medicine and I am almost only around Koreans. I had to refresh my English to do a good job for my reading. I raised the volume of computer to avoid any hearing mistakes and read only English books as much as possible. I opened many of her previous records and reviewed how other poets did it.  Language, we must use it often, otherwise you will lose the skill. I stopped the all other telephone lines for two hours to keep quiet for recording and cleaned the desk and prepared the background and got a cup of water. I asked my wife to go to another room to prevent any noise of coughing, sneezing, particularly dish washing sound. I dressed in formal clothes and put on a bright color necktie and waited in front of the table at 1pm, May 9 th , 2025. Finally, Grace Cavalieri and Mike T from Library appeared and he said hello and moved out to the recording room and my reading and our conversation started and lasted for 35minutes.  She was a 93-year-old brilliant poet and playwright and radio host of the Library of Congress. She was very humorous, compassionate and very impressive. Our recording went very well. The first poem that I presented was titled “Gracious Maria” and I read it in both English and Korean and the rest of poems I read in English. The last one was ‘the most beautiful couple’s dance’ which was written during the medical convention dinner. Eight poems were sent to her 2 weeks prior to the reading and most of them were from my poetry book Callous Clouds  which was accepted by US Library of Congress 2 years ago. I shared several of my poems that day including “Letter to Children of Ukraine”, “Oyster”, “I cannot move my body”, “Thinking Woods, and “Sobbing”. I had talk about Korean War, Vietnam War, anatomy class, and the skull of 16 years old girl. I had a chance to explain about the great mission by the US government and University of Minnesota to help poor Korea after the Korean War 1955-1960 prior to this presentation by mail. We were happy to have this opportunity to present Korean alphabet, Han Gull  to an American audience. I am so honored to participate in this great visual recording of poetry reading. It was the first time for a Korean immigrant to the US. 이재훈 수필가 설날은 일 년 중에 가장 기다려지는 날이었다. 동지의 팥죽에 들어 있던 새알심의 쫄깃한 맛이 입안에서 맴돈다. 설날은 아침 일찍부터 온 집안이 바쁘게 돌아간다. 그믐밤에 잠을 자면 눈썹이 빠진다는 풍습 때문에 뜬눈으로 밤을 지새운다. 며칠 동안 준비한 음식과 제기를 병풍 앞에 있는 상에 올려놓고 차례를 지내면서 설은 시작된다. 재수가 좋아 퇴주잔의 알딸딸한 맛을 보면 그날은 온종일 천국에서 산 거나 진배없다. 차례가 끝나면 쇠고기 국물의 떡국에 세상에 부러운 것이 아무것도 없었던 때다. 웃어른에게 세배하고 나면 덕담보다는 세뱃돈에 더 관심이 많았다. 이집 저집 다니면서 친척과 동네 어른에게 세배하면 집집이 내놓는 가래떡과 조청, 인절미와 동치미, 맛있는 음식에 배가 남산만큼 불러도 좋았다. 친구들과 제기차기, 자치기, 널뛰기, 논이 웅덩이에서 썰매 타기나 팽이 돌리기에 하루를 신나게 보냈다. 설빔의 옷고름은 왼쪽, 바른쪽을 분간하지 못해 제멋대로 늘어졌고 버선의 대님은 아예 주머니에 넣고 바짓부리를 접고 다녔다. 다 저녁에 진흙으로 얼룩진 설빔으로 집에 돌아가면 어머니의 꾸지람으로 꿀밤을 머리로 받아먹기가 일쑤였다. 저녁나절에는 윷판에 동네가 시끌시끌하고, 저녁상을 물리면 토정비결로 한해의 운수를 알아봤다. 나같이 미국에서 산 세월이 고국에서 산 시간보다 더 길어서 더욱 고향이 그리운 때다. 이제는 추억 속에만 아련하게 남아있는 설날의 풍경일 수밖에 없다.     온 세상이 떠들썩했던 밀레니엄이 지난 지도 벌써 25년이나 된다. 폭죽의 요란한 굉음과 샴페인의 달콤한 맛과 함께 2025년의 새해를 맞이하게 됐다. 어렸을 때 사용했던 단기로는 4358년이다. 올해로 6·25 전쟁이 발발한 지가 어느덧 75년이나 지났건만 아직도 남북은 긴장을 멈추지 못하고 서로 총부리를 겨누고 있다는 사실에 가슴이 몹시 저리다. 일 분이 60초, 한 시간이 3,600초인데 하루가 몇 초인지는 모르는 사람이 더 많다. 하루 24시간에 3,600초를 곱하면 86,400초가 답이다. 그렇지만 지구가 시속 1,000마일로 자전하는 시간은 정확하게 23시간 56분 4초이기 때문에 하루는 86,164초가 정답이다. 지구가 해의 궤도(67,000마일)를 한 바퀴 도는 기간은 365.25일이다. 일 년 하고 하루의 1/4(6시간)이 더 많아 4년마다 2월에 윤달을 만들었다. 동양에서 주로 사용하는 음력의 한 달은 29.53일이다. 양력과 계절을 맞추기 위해 3년에 한 달, 8년에 석 달을 윤달로 끼워 넣는다. 올해의 음력 윤달은 유월이다. 2025년은 육십 간지의 마흔두 번째 해인 을사년(뱀띠)이다. 우리 역사에 큰 오점을 남긴 을사늑약이 120년 전인 1905년에 체결됐다. 같은 해에 태어난 아버지는 한 나라의 이름이 다섯 번이나 바뀌는 격동의 시대를 숨도 제대로 못 쉬고 겪었다. 다 지나간 얘기라서 한가하게 말할지 모르지만, 그 시대를 되돌아보면 몸이 부르르 떨린다.    이러나저러나 새해가 오는 것은 즐거운 일이지만, 올해의 지구 인구가 82억을 훌쩍 넘었다. 엄청난 숫자다. 예수가 탄생했을 무렵에는 세계 인구가 2억이었고, 1800년에야 겨우 10억으로 늘어났다. 1900년에 16억을 넘어 1950년에 25억, 1980년에 44억, 2000년에 61억이었다. 정말로 놀라울 정도로 인구가 빠르게 늘어나고 있다. 2030년에는 90억이 넘을 거라고 한다. 지구의 지름은 12,742km이며 둘레는 40,075km이다. 80억의 사람이 양팔(평균 1.5m)을 벌려서 서로 손을 잡아 지구의 적도를 따라서 서면 세 바퀴를 돌 수 있다고 한다. 육지의 사방 1km 안에 53명이 산다고 한다. 우스갯소리로 예수가 밀레니엄에 재림하려다가 사람이 하도 많아서 다음 밀레니엄까지 기다리는 게 좋을 같다고 사도 베드로가 간청했다고 한다.    연말연시에도 한시도 쉴 사이 없이 정치 분열, 종교분쟁, 자연 재난 등 슬픈 소식뿐이다. 이런 모든 것은 사람이 너무 많아 서로 부딪치며 살다가 보니 마찰이 일어나고 삶의 기본 욕구를 해결하기 위해 일어나는 일이다. 그 끝이 어디인지 알 수가 없다. 인구가 가파르게 늘면서 환경 파괴는 가속도가 붙었다. 얼마 전에 읽은 책에 ‘지구상의 인구가 야생 연어보다 일곱 배나 많다‘라고 하는 기사를 읽은 적이 있다. 그 많던 연어가 사라지게 되자 양식으로 수요를 간신히 채우지만, 연어 고기 1kg을 양식하기 위해 사료를 3kg을 먹인다면 그 뒷감당을 어떻게 할지 모르겠다는 글에 고개를 갸우뚱하면서 놀랐다. 선진국에서는 인구보다 차량이 더 많다. 이 차들이 움직이려면 적지 않은 연료가 소모되며 모두 이산화탄소가 아니면 미세먼지로 변해 공기를 오염시킨다. 석유도 50년 안에 바닥이 난다지만 다른 자원은 그 전에 고갈이 날 거라고 해서 걱정이다. 한 해에 수백 종의 flora*와 fauna*가 멸종한다. 가뭄으로 바닥이 쩍쩍 갈라진 호수, 불더위로 불타는 산림, 온난화로 녹아내리는 빙하, 해수의 온도 상승, 씨가 말라가는 물고기를 보는 우리의 시각을 이젠 더는 숨길 수가 없다. 지구 표면의 70%인 바다에는 플라스틱, 산업 잔재, 퇴적물로 가득해 물고기가 살기에 불편하다고 한다. 언젠가 해변에 죽은 고래를 해부했는데 위장에서 24kg이나 되는 각종 플라스틱이 나왔다는 신문 기사를 읽었다. 또한 청정지역이라고 불리는 지역에서 잡은 물고기를 정밀 검사한 결과 건강에 위험할 정도의 플라스틱 미세 분자가 존재한다고 전했다. 2050년에는 플라스틱이 바다의 물고기보다 더 많게 될 것으로 추측한다. 우리가 해산물을 먹는 게 아니라 이젠 플라스틱으로 변조된 음식을 먹을지도 모른다. 인간이 자초한 공해가 총알보다 훨씬 위협적이라고도 말한다.    우리 후손에게 물려줄 지구가 온통 쓰레기로 변해서 사람이 살기에 적당하지 않다면 너무나 슬픈 일이다. 우리가 지키지 않은 한 아무도 도와주질 않는다. 더 늦기 전에 모두 머리를 맞대고 고심하여 손을 볼 일이다. 그게 새해를 맞이하는 나의 간절한 바람이자 내가 해야 할 일 중의 하나다.   * Fauna(동물군) * Flora(식물군)        수필가, 소설가 워싱턴문인회 회원 usajae@gmail.com

Nayoung Bishoff Introduction Oscar Wilde employs the element of art—portraiture—in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). Wilde describes how Dorian Gray appears perfect, satisfying social expectations, while Gray’s hidden portrait becomes stained over time. This article will explore how this stained portrait symbolizes Gray’s hidden self beyond his persona and how the South Korean popular music (K-pop) group BTS (Beyond the Scene) reinterprets this idea in their short film series Wings (2016) within South Korean context. I will first demonstrate how BTS’s intertextuality with Western literature, including The Picture of Dorian Gray , expands the definition of adaptation through a transnational lens. By incorporating elements of this classic novel into their work, BTS not only reimagines the story for the global audience but also highlights the fluidity of literary themes. This approach underscores the transformative power of adaptation, showing how different cultural contexts can work together to create resonant messages that transcend traditional boundaries. Through a comparative analysis between Wings and The Picture of Dorian Gray , I will further explain how BTS, with nearly all of its members coming from working-class families, conveys the message of self-discovery in the stifling environment of South Korea. Like young people in Victorian England, Korean youths are often taught to adhere to the ideal standards set by their elders and struggle to express their own thoughts or beauty. This pressure often leads to depression and a high suicide rate among young people. According to a 2023 BBC article by Serin Ha, South Korea has consistently ranked among the countries with the highest suicide rates in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) since 2003. This high rate of suicide is particularly prevalent among young people, with more than two in five deaths among teenagers and over half of deaths among those in their twenties attributed to suicide (Ha, 2023). Through their sincere storytelling in Wings , BTS portrays their own “stained” portraits on stage, sharing genuine narratives of the mental, social, and generational challenges they faced during their youths. By emphasizing the importance of expressing their true selves despite the expectations of older generations, BTS demonstrates the journey of discovering a youth’s liberating identity amidst societal pressures to conform. K-Pop’s Intertextual Links to Western Classics As exemplified by Wings ’ reference to Western literature, Korean studies scholar CedarBough T. Saeji attributes the success of K-pop’s global popularity to its intertextual connections with literature worldwide. She argues how “[t]he use of intertextual links to familiar and widely known texts welcomes everyone to enjoy K-pop not as a foreign language but as a new field of cultural play” (Saeji 60). Their use of texts extends beyond Korean literature to include Western classics. Saeji explains how Koreans have been exposed to Western classics through their historical engagement with America: Historically, there has been a long engagement between Americans and Koreans, particularly in education. In the 1800s, there was a US-Korean treaty and the arrival of American missionaries who shaped the Korean education system. In part due to this length of engagement, the average Korean knows the Western classics as well as various important Korean works, and to many Koreans these stories are as familiar and beloved as the Korean ones. Post 1945, there was a growth in literary scholarship in English in Korea, and this was seen as a source of modernization. Second, although this may not be as true in all countries around the world, in fact American and English classics from Moby Dick to Frankenstein are very widely known (51). Familiar with both Korean and English classics, K-pop groups like BTS often employ themes or concepts found in Western classics in their artistic works such as music videos (MVs). Saeji notes how “within the short 3- to 5-minute time span of MVs, intertextual references to non-Korean cultural elements frequently refer to classic and widely known works of Euro-American fiction” (51). To analyze such intertextual references in their artworks, fans are interested in reading and analyzing books that have been mentioned by BTS. Based on books recommended and introduced by BTS’s leader RM (Namjoon Kim) in his interviews or magazines, fans have started to seek out and read these books to better connect with their artistic works. These efforts are not limited to the Korean fan community but extend globally. In 2021, fans created a website titled Namjoon’s Library , where they can easily discover the books RM and other BTS members have discussed. The website provides further information about how those books are mentioned by him in different interviews, broadcasts, or social media platforms. The website is regularly updated with new literature (see Figure 1). His book recommendations not only include Korean literature such as Han Kang’s Human Acts (2014), but also Western classics such as Albert Camus’ The Stranger (1942), George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis (1915). Recorded by Library of Congress           (Seo, Youn-Seok, Virginia)   On May 9 th , 2025, I was invited to this program by the poet laureate of Maryland, Grace Cavalieri.  As I recall my high school period, there was a great class on literature given by many famous teachers such as O-young Lee, Yonghak Chang, Dongwook Shin. Mr. Lee who used to live across from Hyochang Elementary School in my neighborhood, asked me to go to a publishing company to bring a check for his manuscript. I liked poetry, but I could not hang on to it for a living. Instead, I did write my diary for a while, but when I became a medical school student, I had to concentrate on studying and working for my tuition. I left my diary-book and my premedical course diploma at my older brother’s house when I immigrated to the US in 1972 and I do not know where those are. It must have a beautiful story in it. My first published writing was an essay on Korean Physician’s Newsletter in February 1968. I was requested to write it by an editor because I at the time led a social student organization, Gunwoo Society with my friend, the late Dr. Shill Shin. The next 40 years afterward I lived as a hard-working physician like most of my classmates. Although the Poet Jong-Gi Mah resided at Toledo, Ohio near Lima where I lived. When I saw him, I wondered why he wrote poems. On 1995 I started writing essays with titles such as “Diamond Mount Trip”, “My Friends at Pebble beach”, and “My dear friends at Old Course at San Andrew” on my alumni newsletter, Sigetop. At my age 65 after retirement from medicine, I published a book “Hello Doctor Seo” and I visited Seoul and purchased a monthly poetry magazine “Shimunhak” to check how they write poems nowadays. Afterward, I started writing poems. I was impressed with a new style of poetry, and I practiced in creating my own. One day my wife advised me to apply to an official admission process to be a new poet.  I agreed and sent my 10 poems as an applicant. On December 24, 2009, on my birthday I received great news from Poet Kyuwha Kim, the editor of Shimunhak and I became a poet. My 40 years of experience as an ENT physician helped my writing, and many poems were about life and death. The panel members for selecting poets were DukSoo Moon, Jaerung Park. Kyuwha Kim, Kyuho Shin and they praised my works on the basis of true experience rather than decorative language. I would like to acknowledge my wife, Sunja, for encouraging me to apply. She graduated from Ewha Women University where she majored in literature. We married during my military service time when we were poor financially. After serving as a medical officer at the Korean army medical school, I served another year at a remote village where there was no electricity. I recall that she always read books even under dim light and had sent a letter to my mother once a month with a check for our parents for 30years till 2005 when my mother passed away at age 97. Also, my wife is very good at spelling, and she has been the first one who read my writing and gave me her opinion with some criticism.  But she never writes on her own. 15 years passed since I moved from Lima Ohio to Virginia. I served as an editorial member of Seoul Nation University alumni Newsletter in the US (2013-2015) and I served as the 44 th  president of my medical school alumni association in North America (2015-2016). I have overseen editing newsletters on Sigetop till now for the last 10years. Also, I attended the activities of Korean literary society in Washington, International PEN Korea, and YundongJu literary society. I learned typing too. All my literary involvement stimulated me to write better.  Several years ago, poet Hyunsook Park established English division of LSW and afterward Young-Key Kim Renaud led to publishing Song In A Second Language  and many members participated including Yearn-Hong Choi, Sarh Song, Kwang Mi Lee, Han Hwangbo, Sukza Park, Ingee Kim, Lydia Im, Hea-ok Kang, Sam Se-Woong Ro, Haesun Jung Ravoke, Insook Kim, Me-Young Kim, Yong-Sil Kim. Meyoung Kim, Nayoung Seo, Young-Key Kim Renaud. Hyun Park-Han, and Youn-Seok Seo. For this book, Poet Grace Cavalieri previewed and made comment, <Voice as A Bridge>. Last Feb 15, 2025, at the St. Johns College, Annapolis Maryland we had book signing session after presentations by Dr. Han Hwangbo, Dr. Kwang Mi Lee, and Professor Young-Key Kim Renaud led by Maryland poet laureate Grace Cavalieri. On Marh 15, 2025, poet Grace Cavalieri invited Professor Young-Key Kim Renaud for a recording at recording room in the US Library of Congress on her English poems and reading. This was the first time any Korean born person did a reading for this program. In the past 2003, as a memorial event of 100 years immigration of Korean to America, Yearn-Hong Choi and Haeng-Ja Kim read their poems on Korean but English version were read by American and Kwi-Soon Kwon read a poem, “Sea gull” of poet Namsu Park in Korean. In April I was surprised and excited to receive an invitation from the program The Poet and   the Poem  presented by Grace Cavalieri over many years. That visual recording will be done by the US Library of Congress, and I had to read eight of my English poems and Grace Cavalieri will be in the talks together in remotely. It will be on Podcast like her other many previous programs. For me It was 15 years after I started writing poems and 53years after I came to the US. I had to prepare for this appearance. For 38 years from 1972, I was around English-speaking people but the last 15 years since I retired from medicine and I am almost only around Koreans. I had to refresh my English to do a good job for my reading. I raised the volume of computer to avoid any hearing mistakes and read only English books as much as possible. I opened many of her previous records and reviewed how other poets did it.  Language, we must use it often, otherwise you will lose the skill. I stopped the all other telephone lines for two hours to keep quiet for recording and cleaned the desk and prepared the background and got a cup of water. I asked my wife to go to another room to prevent any noise of coughing, sneezing, particularly dish washing sound. I dressed in formal clothes and put on a bright color necktie and waited in front of the table at 1pm, May 9 th , 2025. Finally, Grace Cavalieri and Mike T from Library appeared and he said hello and moved out to the recording room and my reading and our conversation started and lasted for 35minutes.  She was a 93-year-old brilliant poet and playwright and radio host of the Library of Congress. She was very humorous, compassionate and very impressive. Our recording went very well. The first poem that I presented was titled “Gracious Maria” and I read it in both English and Korean and the rest of poems I read in English. The last one was ‘the most beautiful couple’s dance’ which was written during the medical convention dinner. Eight poems were sent to her 2 weeks prior to the reading and most of them were from my poetry book Callous Clouds  which was accepted by US Library of Congress 2 years ago. I shared several of my poems that day including “Letter to Children of Ukraine”, “Oyster”, “I cannot move my body”, “Thinking Woods, and “Sobbing”. I had talk about Korean War, Vietnam War, anatomy class, and the skull of 16 years old girl. I had a chance to explain about the great mission by the US government and University of Minnesota to help poor Korea after the Korean War 1955-1960 prior to this presentation by mail. We were happy to have this opportunity to present Korean alphabet, Han Gull  to an American audience. I am so honored to participate in this great visual recording of poetry reading. It was the first time for a Korean immigrant to the US. The Road I Go, Alone Ingee Kim's Poem of Quiet Strength Henry Crawford Jul 05, 2025 Going Alone Last week I had the pleasure of representing Forest Woods Media Productions at the celebration of the anthology, Songs in a Second Language at the DC Arts Club. I concluded my discussion of my role as book manager with a reading of one of the poems from the book, Ingee Kim’s, The Road, I Go Alone. Reading Ingee’s poem inspired me to create a video poem of the work. Poems are, firstly, scripts for a performance. That’s the way they’ve been in the West since Homer. Like the ancients, today we can add music, in this case a solo trumpet with cinematic backing. For visuals, I added a stock footage montage. I hope you enjoy my experimentation with these short videos in Everyday Poet. 환자들을 얼마간 돌보다 보면 죽음이 며칠 남지 않은 그들을 어느 정도 알아챌 수 있게 된다. 코마상태가 길어지는 경우엔 소변량이 현저히 줄어들고 몸이 붓거나 피부가 짙은 보라색을 띠기 시작한다. 가족이나 지인조차 찾아오지 않는 의식불명의 환자는 좀 더 빠르게 죽음이 찾아올 수 있다. 내 환자 중의 한 옆 방에 John이란 환자가 있었다. 그에게 새겨진 온몸의 문신이 실제로 튀어나와 날뛰며 그의 목을 조르고 있는 것 같아 처음 봤을 때는 나의 머리칼이 곤두서고 소름이 돋았다. 큰 키에 근육질 몸매의 30대 후반의 백인 남자. 숨은 쉬고 있었지만 뇌사상태여서 어떤 자극에도 반응하지 않았다. 그의 방에서 수액주사가 끝났다는 기계소리가 시끄럽게 연신 울렸으나 그의 간호사는 번번이 나타나지 않았다. 할 수 없이 내가 자주 들여다 보게 되었다. 며칠을 그렇게 보냈는데 그가 곧 이 세상을 떠날 것 같은 예감이 들었다. 가족이나 연인이 자신을 찾아 주길 애타게 기다리고 있었을 텐데 안타깝게 아무도 나타나지 않았다. 그의 간호사가 아니어서 병원에서 봉사하는 신부님이나 종교인을 요청할 수 없었다. 그러던 어느 날 갑자기 그가 나를 부르는 것 같은 직감을 떨쳐낼 수 없었다. 한참을 망설였다. 그러다 마치 자석에 이끌리듯 그의 방에 들어서자 사탄을 숭배하는 듯한 그의 문신이 더 이상 두렵지 않았다. 아주 잠시 인턴이나 레지던트가 문 턱에 있다 가버리고 아무 그림자조차 얼씬하지 않던 차에 생면부지의 나를 반기는 듯한 느낌이 들었다. 그가 어떤 삶을 살았고 어쩌다 이렇게 되었을까 하는 의문을 슬며시 내려놓았다. 이제 와서 그게 다 무슨 소용인가. 곧 이 세상을 떠날 그에게 집중할 일이다. 오랫동안 노동을 했는지 굳은 살이 오른 큼직한 손의 두툼한 손가락사이로 따뜻한 체온이 전해졌다. 그의 손을 잡자 나도 모르게 그를 대신하는 기도가 흘러나왔다. “지난 날의 잘못과 죄를 회개합니다. 예수님을 온 마음으로 영접합니다. 불쌍한 저를 받아 주소서! 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘!” 그러자 나의 긴장했던 마음이 스르르 얼음 녹듯이 풀리고 표정 없는 그가 평안해 보였다. 다음날 그의 방은 비어 있었다. 어디로 갔는지 묻지 않았다. 내 환자가 아닌 다른 환자차트를 보는 것은 금지사항이다. 확인하고 싶었지만 눈물을 머금고 참았다. 그와 이별은 이미 예상했던 것이다. 9년간 함께 한 숱한 환자와 황망해 하는 그들의 가족들을 대하는 경우, 위로조차 어렵고 눈물로도 모자라고 마음이 아팠다. 동성애자로 약중독으로 깨어나지 못하자 그의 간호사가 된 지 두시간 밖에 안된 내게 온갖 원망을 퍼붓던 젊은 누나의 표정. 추운 밤에 거리를 나가 헤매다 쓰러져 병원에 오게 된 노인에게 그의 딸이 찾아와 서로 욕설하며 저주하던 소리. 남편에게 화가 나서 자신의 오른쪽 귀 위에 권총을 쏴 얼굴이 축구공보다 더 부풀고 왼쪽 눈이 밤송이처럼 튀어나온 중년의 여인, 그리고 그녀를 바라보던 남편의 시선… 그 환자들과 가족들의 삶의 무게가 날 바닥으로 사정없이 짓눌렀다. 그들 곁에 있는 것만으로도 숨 고르기가 힘겨웠다. 그들 곁에서 도망치지 못하고 함께 있기 위해 난 하나님의 옷자락을 세게 잡아당기고 있어야만 했다. 그렇지 않으면 그들 곁에 내가 먼저 쓰러져버릴 것 같았다. 그저 살아내는 일에 기도가 절실했다. 그러다 차츰 환자와 그 가족을 위한 기도가 자연스럽게 나오는 일도 있었다. 그런 날은 힘이 저절로 나고 하루를 지탱할 수 있었다. 그 중에서 John의 큰 손을 잡고 기도했을 때가 가장 기억에 남는다. 그의 영혼은 죽음의 공포에서 해방되었을까. 그렇다면 다행이다. 가끔씩 그 순간을 떠올리며 그가 내게 남긴 것은 무엇인지, 생각하게 된다. <박진희 워싱턴문인회, VA>
